How Chartered Accountants (CAs) can apply for their professional membership with ICAI using the SSP Portal.

 

The application for CA membership is the final and most important step for becoming a recognized Chartered Accountant. Once a seeker cleared the CA Final examination and completed all prescribed training and courses, they are eligible to apply for membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This process to apply for CA Membership is a fully online process through the ICAI Self Service Portal – SSP, where applicants give necessary details, upload documents, and pay the needed fees. After approval, the applicant is officially admitted as an ICAI member and is authorized to use the professional designation “CA,”. After this a CA can begin his/her professional career.

 

Eligibility to Apply for CA Membership

An applicant is eligible to apply for Chartered Accountant (CA) membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) after fulfilling the following conditions:

 

  1. Passing CA Final Examination
    The aspirant must have successfully cleared both groups of the CA Final examination along with the Self-paced Module Test (SPMT) conducted by ICAI.
  2.  Completion of Articleship Training
    The candidate must have completed a prescribed period, of 2 years as per new scheme or 3 years as per old scheme, of Articleship or Audit training.
  3. Age
    The candidate must be at least 21 years old.
  4. Completion of Mandatory Courses
    All compulsory courses such as AICITSS (Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) must be completed.
  5. Compliance with ICAI Requirements
    There should be no pending disciplinary matters, incomplete forms, or unapproved training records on the ICAI SSP portal.

 

Steps to Apply for CA Membership (via ICAI SSP Portal)

1)     Login to SSP Portal

  • Go to the ICAI Self Service Portal (SSP) on the icai.org website.
  • Enter your Student Registration Number (SRN) and password to log in

2)     Go to Membership Enrollment

  • After logging in navigate to Student Functions → Fresh Membership Enrolment → Apply for membership. 
  • After that you will see Form 2 which is to be filled carefully.

3)     Auto-Filled Details Verification

  • The membership form is pre-filled with your personal, educational, and articleship/training details.
  • Carefully check all pre-filled information and update if required (e.g. address, contact number other qualification, CA qualification, articleship details, industrial training details, etc).

4)     Choose Options & Preferences

  • Indicate whether you want a Certificate of Practice (COP) — this is optional but needed if you plan to practice.
  • Select other preferences such as ICAI journal format (e-journal or physical copy).

5)     Upload Required Documents

Here is the list of documents required for CA Membership form

  1. Upload a passport-size photo with a white background.
  2. Scan and upload your signature. The signature should be in black ink on white paper.
  3. Upload admit card/marksheet. This should be a scanned/digital copy of the last passed CA Final Exam with a clear photo for verification.

6)     Submit form and Pay Fees

  • Pay the required fees based on your selection online via the available payment options

7)     Processing and Approval

  • After submission, your application goes to the ICAI Regional Office for review.
  • Once approved after a few days you’ll receive your membership number and a confirmation email/text.

Disqualification from ICAI Membership 

According to Section 8 of Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 a person may be disqualified from ICAI membership if

  • Not having attained the age of 21 years at the time of application.
  • They are of unsound mind
  • An undischarged insolvent
  • Convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude
  • Membership may also be suspended or removed due to professional misconduct
  • Non-payment of membership/COP fees
  • Engaging in prohibited employment or business, or furnishing false information to ICAI.

 

What is FCA and ACA?

ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant)

  • Status: Entry-level membership with ICAI.
  • Eligibility: After passing CA Final exams and registering as a member.
  • Experience: Generally holds less than 5 years of experience as a CA. 

FCA (Fellow Chartered Accountant)

  • Status: Senior-level membership with ICAI, indicating advanced experience. 
  • Eligibility: Must first be an ACA and complete at least 5 years of continuous practice or service after qualification. 
  • Benefits: Higher professional status, better opportunities, and the ability to get elected to ICAI’s Council. 

What is Form 2

Form 2 is to be submitted to complete the ICAI CA membership process. It is the official application required to enroll as an Associate Chartered Accountant of the ICAI. It is submitted by candidates who have successfully cleared both groups of the CA Final examination, completed the prescribed practical training (articleship or industrial training), and fulfilled all mandatory courses such as AICITSS and the Advanced IT Test, in order to obtain formal membership as a Chartered Accountant.
